running IS the hardest sport
Published on March 2, 2004 By crimson In Sports & Leisure
I'm not going to kid myself by trying to think that I'm some great athelete. I play b-ball once a week in the winters, two - three times a week in the summer and that's mostly it. Yeah, once in awhile I start up on weight training for a couple of weeks, but I find that to be pretty boring stuff. I swim daily in the summer, but it's not as aerobically-intense (considering I'm a big fan of the run in, get wet, run back out and tan- style swimmer.)

So, a couple of days ago, I started running. Well... it was more like a walk-jog-walk-jog-walk-pass out kind of thing, I can't say I actually ran at all. But hey... it felt good. So, I tried it again the next day... this morning was the killer, through. Pain. Lots of pain. And my chest feels funny, but not in an oncoming heart-attack kind of way either... more like an 'if you even try and smoke a cigarette I'll show you who's boss' kind of way.

For the life of me, I can't decide if any of this is good or not.

Have you ever watched the Marx Brothers' movies?

Groucho is impersonating a doctor. The patient says, "Doctor, it hurts when I do this."
Of course Groucho says, "Well then, don't do that."

Seriously: it is hard to start jogging. I'd recommend taking-up Dance Dance Revolution. It is fun, and you don't have to leave the house.

I ran distance all through high school and college. Before kids, I even managed to work my way through a marathon. But every year after the final race or competition, I'd take some time off. Eventually, I'd have to start training again. The first day? Not a problem, second day? Not too bad either, the rest of the week? Hell. If you keep it up on a day to day basis, you'll find that you don't even hit the REAL tired period until two weeks into it. You know, the point where you TRY to run but your legs just don't move? So as to whether it's good or not? It depends. Are you a masochist? If so, then yes. I tell you what though, there was nothing better than finishing a six mile run and move on with your life like nothing happened.

This is what I did

Couch to 5k

Now I run 3mi x 3times a week.

It took me about a year but I was a complete slug and I never really kicked in until I got a running buddy.

I for one feel for you. I done a fair amount of weightlifting a few years ago and visited the gym this Sunday for the first time in almost a year. The pain... My pecs are twice their normal size and swollen. My ass is so sore that sitting down on the can is a real test of courage...

I'm going back there tomorrow.

The only thing you have to do is do it oftenly.
I have never been a big sport addict but I started to go to the gym one year ago the first month was quiet unpleasant but now I really miss it if I don't do my 3 times a week. You feel so much better for everything else than it's definetively worthung it. But be aware, running is really bad for the knee joint...

I think that this is something that I can keep up. Firstly, it's free... no gym memberships. Secondly, I've kind of got a competitive edge. Not with anyone, but with myself. Eventually, I'd like to start doing marathons, although that is waaaayyy in the future. I am trying to do it right by not going overboard, but I have started to look around at other sites that pertain to running/training. Thanks PoetP and all for writing. I'll let you know how it goes.

Hey Poet... don't you think it's kind of funny that your couch to 5 k site is also geared for 'the average Joe'?

Hi all. How's it goin'? Dang I'm in pain too. Not because of working out or anything like that but because I have a fever of over 102 F.
Well, what I was really coming here for was to say congrats. I wish that I could go to the gym and run. The only time my mom can find time to take me is during the summer so every winter a fatten up and all and then during the summer I slim back down. I play on my highschool soccer team so I think you can amagine why I don't like not being able to go.
I wish you all luck on your goals.
