Strange, but in the Toronto Star last week, an article ran about the numerous sightings of unidentified flying objects in Whitby, ON.
I grew up there, yanno. And, the one reverberating question in my mind is: What the hell are they doing there?
Whitby: at one time was farmlands and fields away from Toronto. My parents moved there in the early 60's, and it literally was 'out in the country'. Nowadays, it's just another example of suburban sprawl; the houses that I grew up in are worth hundreds of thousands of dollars, when they were once only a couple of thousand to start from. People make the 45 minute commute into Toronto daily, and Whitby is now getting way too pricey for us normal folk to afford.
We moved away from that town decades ago, to another small town that felt safer, had less traffic, and was less expensive. It's a pretty little town, and there are a great many other pretty little towns nearby. Did you see "A History of Violence" yet? That little town in the movie is actually a little village called Millbrook, a good 20 minutes away from where I now live. Been there. Partied there. Stayed for a time in the same building that housed the little diner. Kinda surreal, actually, to see that town in a big-budget movie. And utterly deppressing to know that Viggo Mortensen was just 20 minutes away from me during filming the whole time. Missed that boat, right.
But, the strange lights that were reported not so long ago have a history. It's not the first time that they've been spotted, you see. And even in good old Peterborough, others have seen them, too. Again? Why? And why do I care? What is the fascination with UFOs and movie stars? Why pay this much attention to people who are really just people with interesting jobs, and lights that are probably just reflections from the underbellies of Canadian geese?
You got me there.
