Out of the books bolded, I've read most of them in highschool/university. Some of the ones underlined, I'm thissure that I've read them, but not 100%. I'm surprised about some of the books not included, and question the books written for a juvenile audience. Why weren't other books like Little Women, Charlotte's Web, etc., not included?

I feel like I haven't read as many as everyone else. I'm tupit!

I would really love to read Tom Sawyer, The Chocolate War, Of Mice and Men, One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, The Bell Jar, and Huckleberry Finn. Which would you recomend I read first? I started the Scarlett Letter about a month ago, but never got past the first chapter because life has been hectic, but I think I will return to it soon. Also, Walt Whitman has been on my reading list for ages.

I never wanted to read Anne Frank's journal; I just felt like it was an invasion of privacy. I don't know; plus, it didn't appeal to me.

I started The Grapes of Wrath because an Uncle of mine was adiment about me reading it; it sucked and I couldn't get into it.

To Kill a Mockingbird and A Separate Peace are in my top 5 favorite books of all time; they're amazing. Of course, they were both highschool reading; I had read them beforehand, but I had no objection to reading them again.

Bridge to Teribithia was read in the sixth grade, and I remember it being the first book that ever brought tears to my eyes. Flowers for Algernon was also elementary reading, but I still believe it to be amazing.

I guess that's it. Give me some suggestions for further reading!

It's a lot harder read than many of Steinbeck's other books. Very depressing and hard to get into, especially if you don't have the historical background on it first.

DON'T give up on him though, he's a sweet author and a fun read, usually. One of my favorites. For a first time at Steinbeck, try Cannery Row. It's funny, light hearted, and beautifully written. If you like that, he's got a sequel called Sweet Thursday (I think Thursday, might be tuesday.)

His other stuff set in the Salinas Valley area is fun too, although you might not want to start with Of Mice and Men, it's a downer, too. (Don't get me wrong, well worth reading, but how often do you continue reading authors when the first time you pick them up, they depress you?)

My absolute favorite is East of Eden, but only start this one if you've got a lot of time on your hands. It's about 800 pages long and deals with the story of original sin, through the story of a single family. Too long of a comment. Try Cannery Row!

I don't have time to go through and do this but I have two quick comments:

1) I suggest anyone who hasn't read Black Like Me should.

2) I didn't read the book but Doctor Zhivago is one of my favorite movies. I saw it for the first time when I was very young and have been a bit fascinated by it ever since. Once you hear "Lara's Song" you'll never get it out of your head.

"Black Like Me" bored me to tears.

But hey, differences are beautiful.

I was suprised at Of Mice and Men, and yes, it's sad as all that, but definitely worth the tears. Go for that one, if you want to be moved.

I shouldn't even comment.

I've read #1 The Bible and #46 Lord of the Flies by William Golding

But I've seen a few of the movies.
Colour Purple
Moll Flanders
Huckeburry Finn
Tom Sawyer
Oliver Twist

And I've read all of Lousia May Alcott's Little Women series (Little Women, Good Wives, Little Men, Jo's Boys) books and 2 Jane Austen Emma and Pride & Predjudice and my favourite book ever was Charlotte's Web.

My highschool reading books were classic/contempory Australian mostly.
Picnic at Hanging Rock
Queen Kat, Carmel & St Jude get a life
Mandragorra
Tomorrow when the War began
Looking for Alibrandi
and
Lord of The Flies
The Outsiders
The Pinballs

Okay I really really shouldn't comment.
