or new sensation, i guess...
I've been purchasing a shitload of magazines lately. It's been awhile since I've even bothered, as I usually catch up on my entertainment news via WENN or leaving through the odd gossip mag at my mother's place. However, since working, I've found that magazines are the perfect time-waster.
See, things tend to happen too fast there, so it's pretty difficult to read a book there. You just get into it, have to respond to someone, and then lose your place and the flow of the words. I'm not a knitter, my supervisor always borrows my pocket poker game, so I end up just doodling away. I suppose it would be a good time to learn how to do something crafty like knitting, but seriously, if I was going to go crafty at this stage in life, I think I'd want to pick up on sculpting or pottery than the needles. I've tried before, and it's never taken... I don't think it will just because I occasionally get bored at work, now.
So anyhow... After reading hundreds of cheesy headlines, and scanning through thousands of articles that promise blissful entertainment I must admit that I find it grating when an author refers to a person with the scandalous stuff first, rather than the true accomplishments that they might have had. For instance? I saw an article about INXS. The author was talking about the lead singer, Michael Hutchence, and of course, the first identifying description was not about the great tunes that he performed but about his last moments in life. Supposed last moments in life.
Michael's not the only one they do this to. Think about Joaquin Phoenix. He is a fucking fantastic actor, but I've yet to see an article about him that doesn't mention his brother. Pretty sad. After his many great strides in acting, reporters still continue to bring up a tragic and emotional event that is always apparent that his wishes not to discuss. Why can't people just honour that and move on?
I was going to write more about this, but I've decided to go to the beach instead. Seriously. It's probably going to be the last great Canadian weekend with temperatures over 27, and I don't want to miss a moment of it.
