tell me about it...

I've spent a lot of time sitting down in the past couple of weeks.

It's disheartening to realize that, unless I step up my activity level and decrease my food consumption, that I will soon start gaining weight and all because I've become employed. (And can afford to eat more often. hehehe)

Since working, I've noticed some differences in my physical well-being:

  • my neck hurts when I first get up in the morning

  • I've got sore hips by the eight and a half hour mark of my day

  • I tend to have to stretch every chance I get. Any time I have a spare moment away from my desk, I either do quick stretching or squatting exercises.

  • I've taken the elevator more often in the afternoon than I would have before, simply because my body feels shaky, not because I can't handle 3 flights.

  • my skin has become drier, and my hair seems oilier, if that's possible. (or even spelled correctly. hehehe.)

  • I have become more aware of certain 'scents' in the air. What is up with that?

  • My brain is disturbed in realizing that almost all of the men that work with me look the same: short brown hair, goatee-thingy, glasses and 1o or so extra pounds. And they all dress the same, so it's difficult to tell them apart that way. Or maybe my brain isn't working well enough to notice any other variation. Yet there is quite a variety of women at work, covering different age brackets, race, and fashion style.

Is any of this at all typical or familiar?

First of all, congrats on the job!

I have a desk job and have had for quite a while. Some advice:

1- I work out at a gym 3 to 4 times a week. Boy, do I feel better!
2- Its okay to get up and take small walks. The brain is an organ and needs blood to function. Increasing circulation makes you think better, hence more productive. In the summer time, I will take brief walks outside. (You remember "outside," right?)
3- Bring healthy things to snack on, if you are a snacker. I also bring my lunches. And diet drinks.
4- I have a tennis ball at work that I squeeze as a stress antidote.

I am sure that there are plenty of other things that you can find for yourself.
