So, I am still waiting to meet with my prospective employer, and to find out about the salary. It's got me on the edge of my seat, but there really isn't anything that I can do to hurry the process. I'm to start this week, if everything can get signed and settled quickly which leaves me with a lot of hassle to deal with concerning my current employer.

To make a long story short, I'm booked until the end of September, and it's business ettiquette to provide a full two weeks notice before leaving. However, after enquiring about chances of rehire I was advised that it's not usually done, even if 2 weeks notice were given, and stats were excellent. Then, I asked about reference letters and was flat out told that they are not given out, simply a letter confirming hiring and exit dates. So, I asked what was the point of even giving 2 weeks notice and my supervisor shrugged her shoulders and said that there was no point at all.

So there you have it. Great way to run a business.

It's not like I planned on a career in the cellphone industry, and I can certainly get personal recommendations from several supervisors from the same company, but it bites me that they couldn't even make a resignation go smoothly or nicely. In more ways than one, I'm turned against big companies that simply treat you as a number, though their PR department states otherwise.

But yeah! A new job on the horizon, and in my field to boot.

Did I mention I'm about to become a landowner as well? In an unexpected change of events, our band has been offered claims of land: registered band members are entitled to 5 acres of woods and waterfront. I'm going to sign up for it.

Tonight is my Friday night. Six long days in a row, and I've only got one thing on my mind... total relaxation. Rent's paid, and a few bucks left over for an afternoon of coffee and writing, a couple of rental movies, and several loads of laundry. I could do more with the time off, but I'm not gonna.

So that's it for me. For now.

How exciting! I don't know what I am happy more for you the new job or the land. I think the land sounds awesome. I am jealous.

Keep us up to date.

That is just plain ignorance Nicky, kick their butts!

Some companies have no idea how to treat people do they?

A lot of companies have a no rehire policy, but as for a letter of recommendation, that is your supervisors purview.  It is their opinion of you, not the company's.  I have gotten and written many letters of recommendation.  Even though it looks like there is no benefit to 2 weeks notice, the benefit is in how you feel about it.  If the company has treated you fairly, then it would only stand to reason to treat them fairly.

Good luck!  On the new job and the land.

Yeah, but they won't give YOU two weeks if they decide to cut you loose! Lol...

I envy your "being on the edge of your seat." I haven't felt that way about anything in a long, long time. And congrats on the land, too! Luv ya, Nic...

They will at least pay you IF they are ethical.

Good news: I got the job and I start on Monday. Pay for the first 3 months matches my current salary (I'll actually be making 50.00 more every 2 weeks), and then in January, I'll be making 4 dollars more an hour thereafter. Lots of busy hours during productions with some well needed time off between gigs and a full month for summer break. And the bonus is that this is more than a 12 month gig. They're looking for a long term commitment.

Funny thing is this: in a roundabout way, I got the job because of my writing. The director saw the reading of a play that I cowrote, and I got a good recommendation from other people in the production who had seen another play that I wrote and acted in. I never thought that my writing was anything more than just a good way to pass the time.

Thanks all for your good wishes.

Congrats on the job. Sounds like a big improvement.

I don't comment much, but I do read you regularly.
