Why don't they
Do what they say, say what they mean
One thing leads to another
You told me something wrong,
I know I listen too long but then
one thing leads to another...
The Fixx
After reading LW's article He's Better Off Dead

, it just brought up all the stuff that I've been trying to ignore at my place.
I live in Native Housing, and for the most part, it's all right. The apartments are clean, it's income adjusted, and they take care of the outdoor work, regardless of the season. Management is good for the physical aspect of the housing units, but when it comes to dealing with issues between tenants, they're bloody useless. It's just an office for busy work then advising use towards filing useless forms, directions to different organizations including police, Social services and Children's Aid.
Since living here, I've seen kids taken away due to neglect, had regular drop-ins from the police about other peoples issues, seen apartments evacuated overnight, and have had someone torch their own apartment to hide the evidence, thereby putting other innocent individuals in danger.
It's not much of a guess, but all of it is due to either drugs, alcohol either from the single female with child living there, or from an abusing partner who then puts all his demons on her and the child. (Native Housing here is for people with children, not just single people). And then, there are the girls who just keep getting pregnant after working so hard to get their GED. It's like they take big steps to move ahead, and then suddenly find themselves pregnant again, and all their effort put off for another couple of years until that child is old enough to be left at daycare while she tries to find work.
I'm sick of it.
But I'm caught in the circle as well, working a crappy job for shite money. It is the bane of small town living, where there are not enough decent, well-paying jobs, and available jobs on contract only.
I'm finished though. I'm quitting my job soon, because if I don't leave it soon, I'll just be some semi-poor worker, just barely making ends met. I can do more.
I've got to.

So are you moving to another town? What are your plans? It's hard to make a big change but you're right, sometimes if you don't you just get stuck in a situation you don't want to be in.

We spend too much of our time at work. SO we should at least enjoy it. Do what you have to, and good luck.

Sometimes it's hard to get yourself out of a rut, when you feel like you're stuck. The good thing is you've identified this need for yourself and now you must move forward and make it happen. This is where making a plan becomes helpful. Write down your goals or the very basic steps that you need to take to make this change happen for you. Just don't forget that you want to do it and do nothing or the days will turn into weeks, into months and you will still be on the same road.
Good luck Nicky, I know you can do it!

I've asked before but I cant remember which thread it was on...have you ever considered heading south, Nicky? Like to America?
Believe me, if I was able to move, I'd be outta here
likethat
. But, due to the seriousness of Kole's learning disability she simply wouldn't get the quality of education that she's getting at her current school if she moved to a different one.
I checked into it about a month ago, and if I moved to say Toronto, the waiting list for an Occupational Therapist, and scheduling of special needs advisors and materials would take at least 2 1/2 to 3 years to match the stage she's at now.
Nah. I'm in this town for the long haul, it seems.

That's where it could go so easy... thanks for the advice and encouragement!

Nicky,
'Reach The Beach' by The Fixx is one of my favourite albums from the 80's. Wow, I thought I was the only person left, with the exception of my wife, who knew who The Fixx were. How cool...
I do hope you find a better job, but as you said, the problem with living in a small town is finding adequate work. I wish all the luck I can send, mate. Have a lovely weekend.
