m. night shyamalan is kicking it again...
I am really pumped to see The Village. It's release date (in the States and presumably Canada) is July 30th, 2004. The next four months are going to go verrrry slowwwwwly until then.
M. Night Shyamalan can't disappoint. Most of his movies have been wildly sucessful, and all because of his amazing writing. Don't get me wrong; actors like Mel Gibson and Joaquin Phoenix in Signs(2002), and Bruce Willis and Samuel L. Jackson in Unbreakable(2000) were all great. And his roles played by young actors like Rory Culkin and of course, Joel Haley Osment allowed the audience to see what kind of acting can really be done by children. And what about mice? Talking mice? His stint as writer on Stuart Little surprised even me.
The Village again stars Joaquin Phoenix, one of the most underrated actors today. Never one to coast like Ben or Freddie, Phoenix takes on roles that are often not as lucrative yet very challenging. Along with a stellar cast including William Hurt, Sigourney Weaver and Adrien Brody, this movie also marks Bryce Howard's screen debut. Howard incidentally replaces Spiderman actress Kirsten Dunst.
"Set in rural Pennsylvania in 1897, this is the story of the small village of Covington, with only a population of 60, surrounded by woods inhabited by a race of "mythical creatures," and the romance that blossoms between Kitty, the daughter of the town's leader, and Lucius, a young man. However the village becomes threatened when Lucius questions the policy of keeping Covington's citizens completely confined to the village."
Not much was shown on the trailer, but it is definitely a M. Night Shyamalan film. Tense moments, suspensful storyline non-contemporary setting and a reputation for pitching curve balls in the last inning makes this movie one worth waiting for.
